NIDA Online: Writing for Performance – Finding your Story

Overview

Embrace the power of storytelling and join us in shaping narratives that resonate on stage and beyond. Our interactive online community for budding writers will engage you in exercises that explore the creative journey from inception to performance. 

Collaborate in writing tasks designed to sharpen your craft and engage in lively discussions around set-readings. Join in on text analysis workshops and work alongside NIDA teaching artists to dissect short dramatic scenes that explore the nuances of character, conflict, and subtext. 

Whether you want to expand your creative toolset or are curious about what it takes to be a writer, this course offers a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere to craft original works that captivate and inspire.  Experience the thrill of seeing your words performed in an online reading by actors and gain invaluable insights into the collaborative process of developing ideas for performance. 

Delivery: Face to face via Zoom, 2.5 hour sessions, twice weekly x 4 weeks 

Pre-course work: 45 mins reading & written response 

Self-directed learning: at least 60 min writing activity between each session 

Components 

  • Develop dramatic writing techniques that craft compelling stories for performance. 
  • Collaborate with writers, actors, and directors in the development of a short dramatic idea. 
  • Refine your dramatic writing skills and prepare your scene for performance by professional actors
