Overview

This course is designed for creatives eager to broaden their skill set in preparation for collaborative work with actors. Ideal for aspiring directors or playwrights, it offers a comprehensive exploration of the essential techniques needed to bring out the best in your actors and create compelling performances.

Under the expert supervision of a NIDA Open teaching artist, you’ll explore a variety of methods for text analysis and interpretation. Learn how to dissect scripts, understand character motivations and use these insights to elicit outstanding performances. Through hands-on activities and feedback, you will develop the ability to work effectively in a rehearsal room setting. Collaboration with NIDA actors is a key component of this course, providing you with practical experience in guiding performers through their creative processes.

You will explore casting techniques, learning how to confidently select the best actors for your projects. Additionally, you’ll gain a deep understanding of how technical aspects, such as lighting, sound and set design, can enhance the overall performance and support the actors’ work on stage.
